Poker info IV
September 22nd, 2008In poker games, when in a round of betting no player has the option to raise the bet any more, then that round is said to have been closed. This happens mostly in games where there is the maximum number of raises rule where the betting round ends because already the stipulated number of raises has taken place. When a betting round is prematurely closed, the reason is the player who raised it last did so by going all-in and paying a bet that is lower than the ongoing amount.
A poker game is also said to be closed when no player can know his opponents cards until showdown. Except rollout variation, all other draw poker games are closed games whereas stud poker games, with Blind stud poker as exception, are commonly open games where cards are dealt face up and hence exposed. Also the community card poker games are regarded close since the exposed cards are common to all and other cards in play are revealed only during showdown.
Another situation in poker games is domination when one hand is highly favored to win. In drawing play, if one player has to receive three or less outs to improve his hand, then his opponent is said to be holding the dominant poker hand. In the hold’em poker games domination happens regarding hole cards. When there is a high and low pair playing, the high card player is dominating and is almost sure to win unless the opponent ends up with a straight or a flush or a third card of same value as his low pair. Another domination situation is when a high pair is higher than at least one of the non-paired cards. When the players are holding a high versus low kicker card, the dominant player will win unless his opponent gets a flush or a straight or any of the three kicker cards of his own rank.
