In poker games, when in a round of betting no player has the option to raise the bet any more, then that round is said to have been closed. This happens mostly in games where there is the maximum number of raises rule where the betting round ends because already the stipulated number of raises has taken place. When a betting round is prematurely closed, the reason is the player who raised it last did so by going all-in and paying a bet that is lower than the ongoing amount.

A poker game is also said to be closed when no player can know his opponents cards until showdown. Except rollout variation, all other draw poker games are closed games whereas stud poker games, with Blind stud poker as exception, are commonly open games where cards are dealt face up and hence exposed. Also the community card poker games are regarded close since the exposed cards are common to all and other cards in play are revealed only during showdown.

Another situation in poker games is domination when one hand is highly favored to win. In drawing play, if one player has to receive three or less outs to improve his hand, then his opponent is said to be holding the dominant poker hand. In the hold’em poker games domination happens regarding hole cards. When there is a high and low pair playing, the high card player is dominating and is almost sure to win unless the opponent ends up with a straight or a flush or a third card of same value as his low pair. Another domination situation is when a high pair is higher than at least one of the non-paired cards. When the players are holding a high versus low kicker card, the dominant player will win unless his opponent gets a flush or a straight or any of the three kicker cards of his own rank.

Chip race in poker games is not a common feature in house games or casino games, nor is it applicable to online poker games. Only in major poker tournaments do the concept of chip race come into play and it has a beneficial aspect of speeding up gameplay by taking away smaller denomination chips when they are no longer needed in course of the game and replaced by bigger chips of same value.

In case some players cannot convert all their smaller chips into larger chips and there are some left over. In this case the players are dealt one face up card for each chip that could not be converted and the pattern of dealing is the player seated at number one position gets the first car, his neighbor gets the second card and so on. Players however do not get the card dealt in the traditional fashion but receive all their due cards at one go. So if a player is stipulated to get three cards for his three chips, then he will get all his three cards simultaneously before the next player due to receive them gets any.

In order to assign larger chips to the players, not their poker hands but their highest single cards are considered, with the condition each player may receive only one chip. If there is a tie with cards of the same rank, then the suit of the cards are taken into account with spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs in the descending order of importance. Any other lower value chips are taken out of gameplay.

An important thing to remember regarding chip race is that players do not get eliminated by this condition. If his last remaining low value chips are taken out of play due to chip race, he is immediately given a colored up chip if it is available. The extra colored up chips are given to the winner or winners of the chip race.

In poker tournaments, a situation is often encountered called the chip race. This is found mostly in games like the Texas hold ‘em, where the blind bet size grows progressively bigger and certain values of chips become redundant in play and are taken out of the game. This has the advantage of reducing the chip stack that a player has by eliminating not-to-be-used chips from gameplay and he can now manage his stock of chips piled before him, count it and make bets more easily.

When a chip race is taking place in a tournament game, all participants try to exchange the lower chips and get a higher value chip. So, if the blind bet value has risen and $5 chips are no more needed, then players try to convert maximum of their $5 chips in to 5-chip set and get a single $25 chip, in the process being left with only a few $5 chips that could not be converted as it was lesser than a multiple of five. The spare chips are collected and the table receives larger value chips of equivalent amount. If six players are in the table with a total of 20 numbers of $5 chips then four $25 are prepared. If the leftover chips cannot be converted to a big chip directly but the amount is more than half the value of a big chip, then an extra big chip is supplied. So, if there were 16 numbers of $5 chips, then there would be three $25 chips and five $5 chips still extra. However, if there are18 numbers of $5 chips then after providing three $25 chips, the rets chips add up to $15 which is more than half the value of the big chip. Consequently, the table will be given four $25 chips even though the total fell short.

In poker games, two very important concepts are buying in and cards speaking and it is important to know what they refer to.

In poker tournaments, participants are required to make a payment as the entry fee which is called the buy-in. The value of this buy-in contributes to the pot size of the tournament and also part of the charge or rake collected by the casino house as expenses. So, if 50 participants want to play in a tournament, each may have to pay a buy-in of $110 where $100 will contribute to build up the pot and 10% of this amount or $10 is the house rake. So, the prize money for they tournament becomes $5000 while the casino hosting the tournament gets $500 as rake.

The concept of cards speaking can be explained in two situations regarding poker games. So, when a high/low split poker game is being played and no declaration has been made by the players, then the concept of cards speaking means that each player exposes his cards during showdown and the one with the highest hand wins the top half of the pot and the player with the lowest hand wins the bottom half, with the same player with both best high and low hands, scoops the game.

Otherwise in poker games cards speaking can also refer to a casino house rule according to which if a player makes a mistake or a deliberate wrong verbal declaration, it would not be binding on him and his cards will actually determine how he fares in the game. Depending on the house, the casino reserves the right to declare the hand of the player who had made a wrong call as foul. However, cards speaking do not judge the winner of a pot, it only states that in poker games the actual merits of the card ultimately determines a player’s hands and not what he may declare his value as.

Online poker sites offer both freeroll and play money tournaments for their patrons. The two types of tournament are different from one another in two ways. While a play money tournament calls for the participants to pay a buy-in and the prize money is constituted from that play money pool, in case of freeroll tournaments the players can genuinely enjoy a free competition or make some payment in terms of points, a system that is developed by that particular gaming site or in some cases, ask the participants to deposit some fund in their account. The prize for such tournaments can be real cash, or award of points or some merchandise, and in some cases an invitation or an entry chance to a larger tournament.

Most of the online poker playing sites that offer freeroll tournaments allow the participants to play on payment of points that they can earn only when they play hands by paying with real dough. However, some sites do allow really freeroll tournaments without anyone having to pay anything with the chance of winning hard cash as prize. Since freeroll tournament can act as feeder poker tournament by giving the winner a ticket to enter a larger tournament, most feeder tournaments are not freerolls and require a buy-in. if this happen, then instead of calling them feeder tournament, the freeroll tournament is called a satellite tournament and is a popular poker competition in both real and online casinos.

Example of a major freeroll poker tournament is the Professional Poker Tour where the participants can enter by qualifying through winning result in previous competitions and the money to be awarded comes from pooling funds accumulated by selling rights of sponsorship and broadcasting. However, it is interesting to note that freeroll tournament though mostly used for poker games is not exclusive to this particular ganbling game. Many other casino games like blackjack, craps, slot machine and viseo poker are also played in form of freeroll tournaments open to the regular customers of a casino house and also for them who often play for high stakes.
